two of the three articles kept my interest. the first one which spoke of the planets and the one which spoke briefly about Leonardo de Vinci. I think its crazy how far people will go to make something so far away look so beautiful, so we think its more important. Frankly i dont think its the color of a planet we have reached which grabs our attention, but the fact that we had reached it in the first place. i understand they are trying to get the message out there that something amazing has been caught on film, but i dont think enhancing the image is really necessary. its like lying to the whole public. We see it all today in magazines of models and what not. Photoshop has really taken over, and this really shows how much appearance means to us as people.

I enjoyed reading the article about distinguishing the difference between art and reality. my english teacher in my highschool used to say, ” no matter how beautiful the image. the site itself is even more.” so my opinion on whether art is real or not, is that its a copy cat. it may look like a duplicate, but its just an impersonation. Art can look however it wants to, but the thing is its subjects can never really change.

i thought that this section was incredibly interesting. gender roles in society are not done unnoticed. what i mean is that people see how certain jobs are usually done by men or certain jobs that pertain to usually women, but are now done by both genders. Even though the masses say that certain jobs can only pertain to a certain sex, it doesnt mean thats right. another part of the section speaking about cartoons and how they mean so much more than what messages are shown for the children. I was truly in shock when i had read that. but it does make sense. the last time i had watched spongebob squarepants, i had noticed how there were quite a handful of jokes that only adults would understand. all in all the sections were really interesting.

this reading was quite interesting in my opinion. It really made me think about how awesome and advanced our brains are to pick out and start thinking about numerous things by the simple sight of a picture or any type of viewing. Propaganda has always had an impact and even today it remains. From the Nazi era with Hitlers propaganda with the swastik symbol, to all the signs we had on our lawns about which presidential candidate we support. im not comparing McCain and President Obama to Hitler, but in both cases there was propaganda that in a way made us think twice about what we thought. Pictures are powerful tools in today’s society. from for sale signs on cars and houses, to clearance signs on stores, to even advertisements on billboards all around the world. They all send the message they are trying to tell the world, and for the most part its successful. their ideas get across. To me this sections relates to the ones talking about how media images influence how younger children yearn to look like the models on the advertisements.

image. this topic in my opinion is very interesting. The section which i liked the most was the one talking about dreams. dreams according to freud stand for something. he says that there is symbolism between the objects in your dream and the objects and people that you know in your real life. this to me shows how every single little image that processes through our brain has so much thought behind it. images are veiwed in many different ways. thats the beauty of art. art can stand alone in an completely empty room and fill the space for the emptiness. Art stands for interpretation and i love how many of us treat our own bodies and personality as art. we wanted to be perceived a certain way. we want to withhold a certain image that people can remember us by. images and with the help of technology have found a way to keep an image the way it was seen; through photography and portrait paintings. paintings hold a thought to paper or canvus, thus creating immortality for a memory. The great thing about the images we see is that no matter whether or not we remember it, noone else will ever see that image the same way you had seen it. our imagination of how we percieve events is what makes us unique. someone who is very angry may see a painting of a massacre and seem pleased by it, when a sane person who isnt angry sees the painting and feels disgust and sadness. images and paintings can show our emotions through our interpretations. commented on Nevin’s

violence has worked its way into many of our lives under the radar. Television and Video games look to be the culprits behind the raised stats of crime and homicide. To me the correlation of media and violence is believable. Teleivision has changed alot, and more and more shows that strive off of violence are thriving. kids and adults watch these shows and it works its way into their brains. there have been so many cases of kids who play video games that take place in war, going out and shooting innocent civilians. the only thing i have to say about that is that parents shouldnt buy games rated M for mature for their children who arent of age to play the game. Many videogames today advocate violence, and according to the statistics it raises the chances for the gamers to be susceptible to engaging in violence in the future. One debate that is closely linked to violence among young children, is the music they listen to. i used to be a big rap fan, but now adays all the rappers are spreading the same message: money, guns, sex, and cars. many artists settle their outside issues with other rappers through songs called disses, and the amount of vulgar in those songs is unbelieveable.

the second article was really interesting in the fact that i could pin point some images that have become icons in modern day. kanye’s done it. there are also plenty of jokes of mount rushmore, where the heads of the presidents are swapped with other characters. brands are seen as an element in todays world. they are much more than the name of the item. they stand for every stitch. logos for brands and mottos are what are remembered generally. advertisment campaignes have just set out by stating the logo and the motto, and they have bee quite successful in doing so also. my five minutes are up, and all i have to say is that violence is manupulated by the media that we see in teleivsion and video games and brands are brands by the end of the day, but we still perfer some over others.

i had really enjoyed this reading because it make me think of how my life has been so different frm my dads. technolgy has hepled me and has been apart of me eversince. i have seen the major differneces for example: dial up to dsl. this age is definitely the age of technology. it has advaced so much to the extent where we are always surprized when a newer model comes out. thought its a great thing to havre technologyh always upgrading but it can also be very frightening. Webcams are all around the world and anyone can see them if its accidentaly leaked to the internet. the book brings up a very good pint. i feel very afriad at teh fact that a camera can be looking for at any given time. im teh type of person who always needs to havre the most top of the linethin object. if i was to get a phone i would absoluetly have to get the greatest phone no matter the price. i edont mean to sound as if im made up of money. but the thing is if there is a projut out there that is reaalhy alot better than the competition, i will have to get it. the story emphasizes how much technologyh has evolved from transportaton to communication and even travelling. the internet has been popular for only a few years. and its taking us by storm. i feel like im mking a lot of mistakes. like just today we had to blow up a piture of my grandma and we used photoshop. ac ouple of years ago i would hnt have known what anhyone was talking about when speaking of computers, but with new technology comes new knowledge with them. instead of listening to a vinal we listen to music through our computers, phones, and mp3 players. i have a particular song stuck in my head, its kinda techno hiphop and its bugging me becuase it really relates to this peice.

this experience was really crazy. i noticed how many errors i had created. i felt as if i made a tremendous amount and i know when i had messed up. i actually had to stop my self from pressing the backspace button. i got alot of my ideas that i wanted to share out. and i do believe that you can make out what i was talking about. i think this process is riviting because you never know what you are going to write until you write it. i prefer doing free writes with a pencil and a sheet of paper. im conditioned to press backspace when i make a mistake, its really hard to keep myself from not presing it when i do infact mess up. just thinking really hard about not making mistakes i think is really helping me out. i have a good feeling that i have fewer mistakes in this than in the earlier blog. when i would type, i would do so with my eyes closed and i could visualize the words i was spelling correctly and incorrectly.

After reading Daniel Goleman’s Equation for Beauty Emerges in Studies i started to wonder whether i looked at girls for their looks or personality and wit. Most of society agrees that looks are important, but is it the only factor that we take consideration into when searching for our sole-mate.

The text reveals that it agrees with my view of the world. I view the world as shallow. That many of us look for the pretty before really searching for inner beauty. There is not something necessarily wrong for liking to look for people who are pretty or handsome, it only reflects what type of person we are. In my opinion if looks are to be first priority that only shows that that person pays attention to where they are on the social ladder. People should care about how they are viewed by others, but not if that causes us to act false to please others. Elaine Hatfield, a psychologist at the University of Hawaii, said, ” Most people assume that good-looking men and women have nearly all positive traits.” This to me makes no sense, its just like judging a book by its cover, you never know whether you will enjoy the read or not until you try.

In Susan Bordo’s Never Just Pictures she states, “Fat is the devil, and we are continually beating him – ‘eliminating’ our stomachs, ‘busting’ our thighs, ‘taming’ our tummies – pummeling and purging our bodies, attempting to make them into something other than flesh.” This quote shows how some people perceive beauty. Having a nice body will not make a beautiful person, it will make you visually appealing to the mass. “Glamorous images of hyperthin models certainly do not encourage a more relaxed or accepting attitude toward the body, particularly among those whose own bodies are far from that ideal.” Many boys and girls today suffer from eating disorders and unhealthy dieting. This is mainly because of models and actresses who unintentionally portray beauty giving the idea that their image is the closest to perfection.

What i found interesting was how Daniel Goleman had added the dimensions to a beautiful face. I had never really looked at it in that perspective. Beauty to me is the chance of a lifetime to spend it with someone who shares similar values, hobbies, and aspects of life. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and it certainly isn’t glamor.

After reading this first chapter, i had lost that feeling of life as we know isnt exactly what we had thought of it. We see our days pass by and we see others do the same but how does it affect the world? Our vision of life in 3rd world countries is completely different from those little boys and girls who actually live there. We arent always aware of our surrounding and thats what i mainly got out of it. in Deborah Curtiss’s “Seeing and Awareness”, specifically the Exercise for peripheral vision. i fully understand what she is getting at when speaking about peripheral vision. We all use peripheral vision every day, whether it be driving, walking, or even playing sports. Its very important that we exercise this because without it life would be alot harder. I played tennis for my high-school and peripheral vision helped me and my partner out alot. we would use this vision to know exactly which way the opponents were moving on the court during play and with that we would counter that by positioning ourselves on our side of the court.

The Vision Thing: Mainly in the Brain written by Denise Grady focused on the ability of our brain to not just perceive but also understand what the picture is telling us. Denise Grady used a quote from Anstis which said, “The brain must process an immense amount of information as fast as it can, using any shortcuts it can…it has to find a minimum hypothesis to cover a maximum amount of data.” What i liked about that quote was that it stated that our eyes pick up lights and darks and in the end of the process our brain will do what it can as fast as possible to give us the insight into what we had just witnessed. without the brain’s capabilities, having vision would be pointless.

“A negative world, with light pouring down from the sky like black paint, shatters those basic assumptions. and when we violate the assumptions, confusion reigns. Reverse brightness , as Anstis di, and critical clues about the world are subverted.” I really enjoyed this quote from Denise Gradys The Vision Thing because it took me a long time to understand what it meant. What i think it was going at is that we cannot percieve the world until we realize that we do not know it whatsoever. If we think of the world upside down we may figure out how it is the right-side up. After some thought the quote made me realize that not knowing the world is a good thing. The less we know the more we can learn of how it properly functions. In Annie Dillard’s Seeing i understood that what we see is totally up to preference. we choose to not believe some events and in the same we we choose to not see them either. Annie Dillard said, ” The secret of seeing is, then the pearl of great price.” The quote can be taken in many different ways, but what i understood from looking at it from an independent thought was that it sums up the rest. To me it meant that seeing is much more than what you expect or how great something you may think really is. If you have that expectancy to see somthing great, you will always see the faults in it. And the same goes for when we expect something very little, we tend to see the best qualities from it.

I learned this insightful information by reading the passages from this first chapter. While i was reading i couldnt stop to think that most of what we see is exactly what we want. we tend to look through objects and people sometimes. What i never really thought about was how the brain is supercomputer that does every move for us without hesitation. Im not saying that i didnt know that the brain was vital to our survival, but that it does so much work for us to have an idea and opinion for an image we may have seen on the drive back from school etc. What astonished me the most was the exercises available for foveal, scanning, and peripheral vision. My opinions have changed to the extent that i realize that there is alot going on that we dont perceive and that there are some things we cant understand until we look at them in different ways in our minds.

In Annie Dillard’s Seeing she had said,”Seeing is of course very much a matter of verbalization.” Communication is key to anything and ours ability to perceive opinions by sight is very helpful. I gained alot of information form this first chapter. Understanding what and how vision works helps us understand what vision is and does for us when we dont even know it.
